A rug should anchor furniture into a single, generous group. When it is too small, everything looks like it is floating, and the room reads smaller than it is. When it is the right size, the same furniture suddenly looks deliberate.
Below are the rules designers use, room by room. Measure your furniture group before you shop, then buy the larger size if you are between two.
This guide reflects widely used interior design sizing conventions. Rug recommendations link to our research-based wool vs synthetic rug guide.
| Room or use | Typical rug size | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Small living room | 5 x 8 or 6 x 9 ft | Front legs of sofa and chairs on the rug |
| Standard living room | 8 x 10 ft | Front legs on, or all legs on in larger rooms |
| Large living room | 9 x 12 ft or larger | All furniture legs on the rug |
| Dining for 4 to 6 | 8 x 10 ft | 24 in beyond the table on every side |
| Dining for 8 to 10 | 9 x 12 ft or larger | 24 in beyond the table on every side |
| Queen bed | 8 x 10 ft | Under lower two-thirds; 18 to 24 in each side |
| King bed | 9 x 12 ft | Under lower two-thirds; 18 to 24 in each side |
| Hallway | Runner 2.5 to 3 ft wide | 4 to 6 in of floor on each side |
Measure the table, then add 24 inches on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Round tables look best on round or square rugs; rectangular tables on rectangular rugs. Low, flat weaves are easiest for chairs to slide on and to clean.
Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, stopping just before the nightstands, so you step onto softness on both sides. Alternatively, use a pair of runners along each side of the bed.
A pad stops slipping, adds cushioning, protects floors and extends the rug’s life. Choose a pad about 1 inch smaller than the rug on every side.
