Most sofa decisions eventually narrow to this: a performance fabric that promises to shrug off juice and dog hair, or leather that promises to get better with age. Both promises are true, but only under the right conditions.

This comparison explains what “performance fabric” actually means, how leather grades differ, and which choice suits which household.

How we evaluated

This is a Research-Based Evaluation. It draws on upholstery industry standards (abrasion testing and cleaning codes), manufacturer descriptions of leather grades and fabric treatments, and Amazon’s summaries of verified owner reviews for the sofas featured in our sofa buying guide. We have not personally tested these sofas.

What the labels mean

Performance fabric is not one material. It describes upholstery woven or treated to resist stains, fading and abrasion: solution-dyed acrylics, tightly woven polyesters and olefins, and fabrics with stain-repellent finishes. Look for an abrasion rating (Wyzenbeek double rubs or Martindale rubs) and a cleaning code on the tag.

Leather varies just as much. Full-grain aniline leather is the natural hide with only dye; it is soft and develops a patina but marks easily. Semi-aniline adds a light protective coat. Protected (pigmented) leather has a surface coating that resists stains and scratches best. Bonded and “PU” leathers are not real leather in any durable sense.

Our verdict

Choose performance fabric for young children, frequent spills, sunny rooms, or if you want a soft, warm sofa from day one. Removable, washable cushion covers are a bonus.

Choose leather for allergy-sensitive homes, households with dogs that shed (but not scratch), and anyone who enjoys a material that ages visibly. Pick protected leather if you have cats or young children; choose aniline only if you welcome scratches as character.

Sofas that show the difference

01Performance fabric pick

Poly & Bark Capri 99" Performance Fabric Sofa

  • UpholsteryPerformance fabric
  • FrameKiln-dried solid wood
  • CushionsFoam and feather; removable covers
  • Size99 W x 40 D x 28 H in

Capri shows what performance fabric does best: owners in Amazon’s review summary say it cleans up well and resists stains, and the removable cushion covers make deep cleaning practical. Full details are in our sofa guide.

What to keep in mind

  • Large footprint for smaller rooms.
  • Owner opinion on firmness and value is split.

02Leather pick

Poly & Bark Napa 88.5" Full-Grain Leather Sofa

  • UpholsteryFull-grain aniline or semi-aniline Italian leather
  • FrameKiln-dried solid wood, corner-blocked
  • CushionsFoam with feather-down topper
  • Size88.5 W x 38 D x 34 H in

Napa is a clear example of aniline leather’s appeal and its trade-off. Owners praise thick, high-quality leather that develops a patina, and they also confirm it scratches easily. Full details are in our sofa guide.

What to keep in mind

  • Scratches and marks readily; not ideal with cats.
  • One-year warranty.

03Compact leather pick

Poly & Bark Nolita 85" Full-Grain Leather Sofa

  • UpholsteryFull-grain Italian aniline leather
  • Size85 W x 34.25 D x 26.5 H in
  • Seat depth27.5 in
  • LegsSolid wood

For apartments and smaller living rooms, Nolita brings the same leather in a lower, more compact mid-century form. Full details are in our sofa guide.

What to keep in mind

  • Low back offers less head support.
  • Aniline leather marks easily.

Read the cleaning code before you buy

  • W: clean with water-based cleaners.
  • S: solvent-based cleaners only; water may leave rings.
  • W/S: either water- or solvent-based cleaners.
  • X: vacuum only; professional cleaning for stains.

For family rooms, a W or W/S code is far easier to live with.

Frequently asked questions

Is leather or fabric better with dogs?
Leather releases dog hair easily, but claws can scratch it, especially aniline leather. Tightly woven performance fabrics resist claws but hold hair. Protected leather is often the best compromise for dog owners.
Do performance fabrics contain chemicals?
Some rely on stain-repellent finishes, while others, such as solution-dyed acrylics and olefins, resist stains because of how the fiber is made. If finishes concern you, ask the maker what treatment is used.
Which lasts longer, leather or fabric?
Good leather on a well-built frame can last decades and age attractively. Performance fabric can last many years too, but may eventually pill or fade and need reupholstering.
Is leather hot in summer?
Leather takes on the room’s temperature, so it can feel cool or warm and slightly sticky on bare skin. Fabric feels more neutral year-round.
