A dining room chandelier is the one light in the house that everyone looks at. It sets the mood for every meal, it is the first thing guests notice, and it is also the fixture people most often buy the wrong size. A chandelier that is too small floats above a long table like an afterthought; one that is too large or too low blocks the view across it.
So we chose these six by fit first. Size: how each one relates to a typical 6-foot, 8-foot or round table. Light: the number and type of bulbs, and whether shades, glass or an open frame shape it. Living with it: adjustable hanging height, weight and how easy it is to clean. Then we weighed style and price.
How we evaluated
This is a Research-Based Evaluation. PALVILLA has not installed these chandeliers ourselves. Here is how we chose them.
- Fit first. We compared each fixture’s diameter with the common sizing rule of about one half to two thirds of a rectangular table’s length, or about half the width of a round table, and checked its hanging height range.
- Manufacturer specifications. Dimensions, number of bulbs, socket type, maximum wattage, materials, rating and weight, from the product specifications published on Lighting New York in November 2026.
- Respected makers. Kichler, Hinkley, Capital Lighting and Visual Comfort are established lighting brands sold through specialist lighting retailers, with installation sheets and replacement parts available.
- Owner feedback where it exists. These fixtures have far fewer public reviews than mass-market lamps, so we say so where evidence is thin rather than inventing it.
Prices and photos come from Lighting New York, an approved PALVILLA affiliate partner. They do not decide which fixtures we include.
Our selections, reviewed
01Best for 6- to 8-foot tables
Kichler Madden 6-Light Chandelier, Black (52719BK)
- Size38 in diameter × 18.25 in high
- Bulbs6 × E12 candelabra, up to 60 W each (not included)
- HangingAdjustable to 36 in overall
- Weight9.25 lb
- FinishBlack (also other finishes in the collection)
- Warranty1 year (Kichler)
At 38 inches across, Madden is sized for the most common dining tables: it sits right in the recommended range for a 6-foot table and still holds its own over an 8-foot one. Six exposed candelabra lamps on a slim black ring give a clean, contemporary take on the classic candle chandelier, and the open frame lets light spread evenly across the table.
It is also one of the lighter fixtures here at just over 9 pounds, which makes installation easier, and it uses ordinary candelabra bulbs, so you can choose warm, dimmable LEDs. The few Lighting New York owner reviews rate it 5 stars.
What to keep in mind
- Exposed bulbs mean the bulbs themselves are part of the look; choose decorative LED filament bulbs.
- Kichler’s warranty is one year, shorter than some premium brands.
- Public owner feedback is limited to a handful of reviews.
02Best designer pick under $400
Visual Comfort Studio Eldon 5-Light Large Chandelier, Satin Brass (DJC1205SB)
- Size34 in diameter × 15.25 in high
- Bulbs5 lights, up to 60 W each
- ShadesWhite linen fabric
- HangingUp to 89.75 in overall; 72 in chain
- Weight5.2 lb
- RatingcETL damp-rated
Eldon is part of the Drew & Jonathan Scott collection for Visual Comfort Studio, and it brings a designer look in at a mid-range price. Five white linen shades on slim satin-brass arms soften the light, so the table glows rather than glares, which is exactly what you want at dinner.
At 34 inches it suits a 5- to 6-foot table, and the long 72-inch chain makes it one of the easiest fixtures here to fit under a tall or vaulted ceiling. It is also damp-rated, a sign of sturdy construction.
What to keep in mind
- Fabric shades collect dust and need an occasional gentle vacuum.
- Shaded light is softer and less bright than exposed bulbs; add a dimmer and plan other lighting for tasks.
- Owner reviews are scarce.
Kichler Winslow 6-Light Chandelier, Black (52616BK)
- Size26 in wide × 16.5 in high
- Bulbs6 × E26 standard, up to 75 W each
- GlassClear seeded
- Hanging36 in chain included
- Weight9.5 lb
- MaterialSteel
Winslow is the lowest-priced fixture in this guide, and it does not look it. Six clear seeded-glass shades on a black steel frame give a vintage, farmhouse-meets-industrial look that suits wood tables and black hardware, and the seeded glass adds sparkle without crystal.
It also takes standard E26 bulbs, which are cheaper and easier to find than candelabra bulbs, and the matching Winslow mini pendant is one of our picks in the best pendant lights, so you can coordinate a kitchen island and dining table.
What to keep in mind
- At 26 inches it is best for tables up to about 5 feet or for round tables; it can look small over an 8-foot table.
- Glass shades need regular cleaning.
- Public owner feedback is thin.
Hinkley Sadie Large Chandelier, Lacquered Brass with Black (48165LCB-BK)
- Size24 in diameter × 6.25 in high
- Bulbs1 medium-base bulb
- HangingAdjustable to 53.5 in; five 7 in downrods
- Weight7 lb
- FinishBlack exterior, lacquered brass interior
- CeilingSloped ceiling compatible
If you want a single, sculptural shape rather than arms and candles, Sadie is a quietly confident choice. The shallow saucer is black outside and lacquered brass inside, so it reads dark and graphic from across the room and throws warm, golden light down onto the table.
Its 24-inch diameter suits round tables of about 48 inches and smaller rectangular tables, and the downrods make it easy to set the right height, even on a sloped ceiling. The smaller Sadie pendant is our top pick for kitchen islands.
What to keep in mind
- One bulb under a solid shade lights the table, not the room; pair it with other light sources.
- It may look too small over a table longer than about 6 feet.
Visual Comfort Signature AERIN Hampton Small Chandelier, Plaster White (ARN4011PW)
- Size16.75 in wide × 8 in high
- Bulbs3 × E12 candelabra, up to 60 W each
- ShapeDrum
- Hanging3 ft of chain included
- Weight9 lb
- FinishPlaster white
Designed by AERIN for Visual Comfort Signature, Hampton is the luxury pick here, and it is made for smaller round tables, breakfast nooks and dining corners. The plaster-white drum has a soft, hand-finished texture that looks especially good with linen, rattan and pale wood.
At under 17 inches wide it is the right scale for a round table of about 36 inches, where a large chandelier would overwhelm the space. It has the strongest owner feedback in this guide, averaging nearly 5 stars across Lighting New York reviews.
What to keep in mind
- It is too small for a full-size rectangular dining table.
- Designer pricing: it costs several times more than the Kichler picks.
Capital Lighting Rae LED Chandelier, Aged Brass (459331AD)
- Size33 in wide × 26.5 in high
- LightIntegrated LED, 3 modules (64 W total)
- HangingAdjustable 33.25–77.25 in; 6, 12 and 18 in downrods
- Weight21 lb
- FinishAged brass
Rae is the jewelry of the dining room. Delicate chains cascade from two rings lined with integrated LEDs, so the light sparkles through moving metal rather than glass or crystal. In aged brass, a warm honey-gold with subtle dark undertones, it suits both traditional and glamorous modern rooms.
Integrated LEDs mean no bulbs to change, and the three included downrods give a wide range of hanging heights. At 33 inches wide it fits most 5- to 6-foot tables.
What to keep in mind
- It is the most expensive and heaviest pick here; at 21 pounds it needs a properly rated ceiling box.
- Integrated LEDs cannot be swapped for a different color temperature or brightness later.
- Many fine chains take patience to dust.
Buyer’s guide: how to choose a dining room chandelier
Size the chandelier to the table, not the room
For a rectangular or oval table, choose a chandelier about one half to two thirds of the table’s length: roughly 36–48 inches for a 6-foot table and 48–64 inches for an 8-foot table. For a round or square table, aim for about half the table’s width. If you are between sizes, the larger one usually looks better.
Hang it 30–36 inches above the table
With an 8-foot ceiling, the bottom of the chandelier should sit about 30–36 inches above the tabletop, low enough to feel intimate and high enough to see across. With taller ceilings, raise it a little and choose a fixture with a long chain or several downrods.
Go long for long tables
For tables of 8 feet or more, consider two matching chandeliers or a linear fixture instead of one very large piece.
Decide how the light should feel
Fabric shades and drums give soft, flattering light. Exposed candelabra bulbs and clear glass sparkle but can glare. A solid dome pushes light down onto the table. In every case, put the chandelier on a dimmer and choose warm 2700K bulbs.
Check the weight and the ceiling box
Lighter fixtures under 10 pounds go up easily. Heavier pieces need a ceiling box rated for the weight; if in doubt, ask an electrician.
Chandelier or pendants over the dining table?
A single chandelier makes the table the centerpiece of the room and suits most rectangular and round tables. Two or three pendants in a row can work better over a long, narrow table or a kitchen-dining space. For pendants, see our guide to the best pendant lights, and for the bigger picture, layered lighting explained.
